Ronda Rousey Refuses Miesha Tate’s Handshake After Armbar Victory at UFC 168 (GIFs)
MMA star Ronda Rousey has built a reputation for herself through a combination of in-ring toughness, unmerciful verbal attacks, and her signature armbar submission hold, which has won her all of her mixed martial arts matches so far. During Saturday night’s fight against Miesha Tate at UFC 168, the latter managed to do something that none of Rousey’s other opponents have ever managed to do: make it out of the first round.
But even that impressive accomplishment on Tate’s part evidently wasn’t enough for her to earn the champion’s respect, as Rousey’s actions following her (inevitable) third round submission victory via armbar prove. Instead of accepting Tate’s customary post-match handshake, Rousey simply shrugged her off, offering this explanation for her perceived lack of sportsmanship:
“My family is my kids on the show, my coaches and my actual family. There’s a lot of things that went on between me and her … I understand that’s a part of the game. But, once you cross that line, I can’t shake the hand of someone who spits on my back. I respect her as a fighter — she did an amazing job tonight. It’s just that a handshake means something to me and she hasn’t earned that from me. You really can’t take back what she’s done until she actually formally apologizes to me and my team.”
Ronda Rousey’s heightened emotions and her rejection of Miesha Tate’s handshake are thought to be a result of drama between the two leading up to their fight. But the bad blood between them might go deeper than that, and it doesn’t appear to have a clear end in sight.
