Kia Rolls Out Matrix-Themed Super Bowl Commercial Starring Laurence Fishburne (Video)
I realize that advertisers have to take some risks when coming up with Super Bowl commercials, and that sometimes the best ones are those we least expected. Nevertheless, when I first saw this car commercial featuring a character from a movie that came out 15 years ago, I was like, “no, that was a bad choice.” I mean, kids today probably haven’t even seen The Matrix, so they’re just going to take one look at Laurence Fishburn dressed up as Morpheus and think this is really weird.
But then I thought about it a little more and realized Kia isn’t trying to sell their affordably-priced luxury automobile to the cool kids. They’re trying to sell it to people like me—i.e., people who can’t believe it’s been 15 years since The Matrix came out, people who still remember it as one of the greatest action films of all-time that completely revolutionized movie-making, and people who (ostensibly) have money to buy cars.
And yeah, to people like that, the whole “red pill/blue pill” gag will be pretty amusing. Take a look:
The singing is weird, though, right?
