It looked like Russia would run away with this one after Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with a wicked wrister just 77 seconds into their opening contest against Slovenia at the 2014 Sochi Games. And that goal was quickly followed by one from Evgeni Malkin less than three minutes later, giving Russia an early 2-0 lead.
Slovenia would bounce back and make a game of it, though, outscoring the Russians 2-1 in the second period to close the gap to 3-2 through 40 minutes of play. But in the end, that was as close as they would get, as Russia came alive in the third and eluded a possible scare with a 5-2 victory.
While the middle portion of their game could use some improvement, the Russians couldn’t have asked for a better start. And speaking of that start, here’s Ovechkin’s opening goal that helped Russia successfully kick off their run in the men’s hockey tournament at the 2014 Winter Olympics:
