NHL Linesman Gets Punched in the Head Trying to Break Up a Scuffle (GIF)

NHL referee punched in face knockout

As the great Kenny Rogers once said, you’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away, know when to run.

Unfortunately, NHL linesman Andy McElman isn’t familiar with the sage advice of “The Gambler.” During a late-game scrum between the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks, McElman should have folded ’em, by which I mean he should have just let the guys go at it. Instead, he tried to hold them apart and wound up getting punched in the face by Chicago’s Michal Rozsival.

Referee down!

Amazingly, no penalties were handed out here. Obviously nobody intended to punch the lineman, but they did intend to punch somebody, so you would think offsetting roughing minors might have been in order. However, McElman probably didn’t want to be accused of overreacting.

Kudos to him.
