Grandson of St. Joe’s Basketball Coach Phil Martelli Was Imitating His Every Move During the A-10 Final (Video)
Given the love the 2014 NCAA Tournament selection committee showed the A-10 this year, Saint Joseph’s probably would have made this year’s tourney even if they hadn’t beaten VCU in the finals of their conference tournament. The Hawks finished the regular season in fourth place in the conference, and the top six all made the big dance, with nobody being seeded lower than 11th.
That being said, when it comes to snagging an invitation to March Madness, you can never be too careful. And prior to yesterday’s A-10 final at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, St. Joe’s was definitely a bubble team. So coach Phil Martelli had to pull out all the stops to make sure the committee noticed his team.
His secret weapon? It wasn’t anybody sitting on his bench. It was his 4-year-old grandson, who was sitting in the first row behind the St. Joe’s bench yesterday, imitating his grandpa’s every move:
Hopefully there’s room in the St. Joe’s basketball budget to fly Martelli’s grandson to Buffalo for the opening round. He’s obviously their good luck charm.
