Mike Napoli Mangles His Finger on Head-First Slide into Second (GIF + Pic)
Last week, Los Angeles Angels superstar Josh Hamilton taught us all a very important lesson about sliding into a base head-first, and that lesson was don’t do it. Hamilton tore a ligament in his left thumb while sliding head-first, and now the Halos will be without their $17 million left fielder for 4-6 weeks.
Unfortunately for the Boston Red Sox, Mike Napoli paid no attention to Hamilton’s predicament. So now it’s his predicament, too.
Last night in Chicago, Napoli dove head-first into second base after advancing on a wild pitch in the ninth inning against the White Sox. In doing so, he jammed his left ring finger into the bag and mangled it pretty good.
“I look at my finger and it’s sideways,” he recounted. “[Umpire] Jim Joyce was going, ‘Oh my God,’ calling for the trainer.”
Here’s a GIF of the moment Napoli realized something wasn’t right:
And here’s a close-up shot of the finger pointing in the wrong direction:
Fortunately for the Red Sox, Mike Napoli is not made of glass like Josh Hamilton. After the game, x-rays came back negative. So for now, at least, Napoli will avoid the DL and be listed as “day-to-day.”
But still, kids, think twice before diving into the bag head-first.
