Not One But Two NHL Players Took Pucks to the Head Last Night (GIFs)

The 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs are just one day and three games old, but we’ve already seen two guys get hit in the head by a puck.

It’s gonna be a long two months, I guess.

The first was Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher. In the second period of the Canadiens’ game against the Lightning, after taking a crosscheck in the back from Tampa’s Nate Thompson, his throat accidentally got in the way of a wrist shot by teammate Alexei Emelin.

Fortunately the thing didn’t crush Gallagher’s windpipe or anything, so no emergency tracheotomy was needed. Instead, the guy missed one shift and then got right back out there on the ice. Because hockey.

The other guy to take a puck to the head wasn’t as fortunate. That guy was Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf, the NHL’s second-best scorer this year. He took a Tyler Seguin slapshot to the kisser in the waning moments of the Ducks’ 4-3 win over the Stars as the away team was attempting a furious comeback.

If that puck was one inch to the left, Ryan Getzlaf’s career (and vision) could be in jeopardy. As it is, coach Bruce Boudreau says he will “probably” be okay. Which means he’ll be back on the ice tomorrow—again, because hockey.
