Pens’ Matt Niskanen Has Some Fun with the Blue Jackets Fans Taunting Him in the Penalty Box (Video)
Every sport has fans and players shouting at each other. However, only hockey punishes players by placing them in a glass box completely surrounded by fans, who then harass the players like kids taunting monkeys at the zoo. It’s just one of those unnecessary, idiosyncratic things that makes hockey great.
I bring this up, of course, because there was a pretty great penalty box player-fan interaction last night in Columbus. When cross-eyed Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen took a two minute minor for tripping at the 18-minute mark of the second period, the Blue Jackets fans gave him a pretty hard time. However, it just so happens that one of those Blue Jackets fan was accompanied by his cute blonde girlfriend, which provided Niskanen with a pretty easy response to the taunts—namely, Niskanen mimed that he could easily steal the guy’s girl because he makes a lot of money.
Take a look:
Now, I’m sure this young woman wouldn’t be so shallow as to date a guy just because he has money, but there are women out there like that, and I suspect Niskanen might be miming from experience here.
That being said, the Columbus fans got the last laugh. The Blue Jackets tied the game with 24 seconds left in regulation, then they won it just two and a half minutes into overtime to even the series at two games a piece.
