Dolphins’ Mike Pouncey Makes Bad Tweet About Draft Pick

Mike Pouncey

The Miami Dolphins were the center of a huge bullying scandal last year, and center Mike Pouncey was one of the chief culprits named in the Ted Wells report on the bullying of Jonathan Martin. Now, Pouncey is in trouble again, thanks to a joke he made on Twitter seemingly in reference to the team’s bullying of new recruits.

It happened after the Dolphins drafted offensive lineman Ja’Wuan James in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. Pouncey chimed in on the event with a tweet that read as follows:

“Great pick! I can’t wait for our gifts he’s getting us lol.”

Thanks to Warren Sapp, we have the tweet immortalized for posterity (along with some choice Sapp commentary):

The joke didn’t sit well with a lot of people on Twitter.  The fallout has resulted in Mike Pouncey deleting his Twitter account and admonition from his Dolphins bosses. Here’s Miami GM Dennis Hickey on the incident:

“We talked with Mike, and Mike understands that sometimes things can be taken out of context. What’s meant as a light-hearted comment can be taken out of context. We talked with Mike and he was good with that and understands social media is a great tool to reach our fans for the positive. But you have to make good choices with that.”

The timing was especially bad on the tweet considering the NFL is still weighing disciplinary action against Mike Pouncey because of the bullying revelations from last year. This is probably not going to help his case.
