This Totally Devastating, Totally Legal Rugby Hit Will Make You Want to Watch More Rugby (Video)
American football certainly produces some devastating, cringe-inducing hits. However, if we’re being honest, a lot of it has to do with the fact that guys can launch themselves like missiles without fear of impunity because they wear helmets and shoulder pads. If you want to see what “pure” hitting looks like—hitting that requires timing and technique—you should check out rugby.
And hey, look at that, we just so happen to have an incredibly devastating, extremely violent rugby hit right here. Isn’t that convenient?
It comes from a Holden Cup match between the Bulldogs and Warriors of Australia’s National Rugby League last weekend. Just 16 minutes in, the Warriors’ John Wesley sizes up and absolutely obliterates the Bulldogs’ Kyle Krisanski-Kennedy with a perfectly legal hit. Take a look:
Wesley didn’t get his elbows up. He didn’t smash the guy’s face with his shoulder. He didn’t launch his skull into the guy’s sternum. He just put his shoulder down and ran right through him, knocking him into next week.
The NFL and NHL should hire ex-rugby players to come over here and teach their players how to hit.
