Manny Ramirez Hits 450-Foot Bomb, Flips Bat Just Like Old Times (Pic)
When former Red Sox GM and current Cubs president Theo Epstein signed Manny Ramirez to be a player-coach for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, a lot of people thought it was a bad idea. During his career, Manny had pretty much established himself as one of the last people you’d ever want to mentor young players, right up there with Josh Beckett and Alex Rodriguez. The guy was damn good, but he was also a temperamental nutjob who tanked in Boston in 2008 to force a trade.
However, the Cubs have insisted he’s a new man, and Manny claims he’s found Jesus, and that this has made him a better person. The team says he’ll be a great mentor for younger players because he can teach them how to hit and how not to behave like a petulant nine-year-old.
So how are things going so far? Well, right now Manny is still getting into playing shape at the Cubs’ extended spring training facility in Arizona. But it may not be long before he heads to Iowa, as yesterday he crushed a mammoth 450-foot home run.
Of course, immediately after he hit the ball he flipped the hell out of his bat, just like old times.

The baseball skills may be there, but I’d say the “setting a good example for youngsters” part still needs some work.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Manny actually has no interest in coaching, and that all he really wants is an opportunity to play ball and maybe get picked up by a contending team in need of a bat come September.
But nah, that couldn’t be it.
