England Physio Gary Lewin Injured While Celebrating World Cup Goal vs. Italy (Photos)
There was a recent moment of exhilaration for the English World Cup soccer team that went south for one of the team’s members.
It occurred when Daniel Sturridge scored in the 37th minute of England’s World Cup opener against Italy on Saturday, as the goal evened the score at 1-1, but the celebration got so intense that England’s Head of Physiotherapy, Gary Lewin, suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle.
Video of the incident is scarce due to FIFA copyrights, but reports indicate that after the goal, several members of the England roster got off the bench and convened on the touchline. That’s when Lewin got caught on the bottom and emerged with the injury.
Still worse for the team, England ended up losing to Italy, 2-1.
After some on-field and spectator confusion regarding what exactly had happened, Lewin was carted off the field on a stretcher, with reports coming in later that he’d suffered the ankle injury during the post-goal celebration. It’s a terrible way to get hurt, but hopefully Lewin will be on his feet soon.
