Portugal Ties USA 2-2 with Header in Extra Time at World Cup (Video)
In a high stakes match that would have been one of the USMNT‘s biggest wins in World Cup history, Portugal managed to knock in a goal in minute 94 of 95 to tie the match 2-2 and keep the fate of every Group G team up in the air.
Portugal opened the match with a quick strike five minutes into play, and the States’ Jermaine Jones knocked in an equalizer in the 64th minute. Clint Dempsey then seemed to redirect a pass with his crotch at 81 minutes.
At that point the prognosis looked bleak for Portugal, who would have been eliminated with a loss. Conversely, a US victory would have given them a pass into the next round, which few would have foreseen.
A guy who just goes by the name “Varela” knocked in a goal with about 30 seconds left in injury time to even things out at 2-2.
Here’s the crazy video in another crazy event in a crazy-fun World Cup:
The lesson? Always keep your f*cking eyes on the soccer players with only one name. They’re like grim reapers in knee socks.
