Lionel Messi Scores Two First Half Goals vs. Nigeria, Including This One on a Fantastic Free Kick (Videos)
Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi opened the scoring against Nigeria today with a bit of a gimme. After an Argentina shot rang off the post, then the Nigeria goalie, then the post again, and bounced right in front of the wide open goal, Messi drilled it home for his third goal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
However, luck had nothing to do with Messi’s second goal. With the game tied 1-1 late in the first half, Messi scored on a free kick from 30 yards out, lofting the ball up and over the Nigerian wall and curling it inside the near post with pinpoint accuracy.
The goalie had absolutely no chance.
Take a look:
The guy makes it look easy, doesn’t he?
And by the way, if you’re keeping track at home, that was Messi’s fourth goal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which puts him into a tie for the lead with Brazil’s Neymar. So while there have been some surprises so far (see you later, Italy, England, and Spain!), some things are playing out just as everyone expected.
