Phillies Fans Give Tony Gwynn Jr a Standing Ovation in First Game Back Since the Passing of His Father (Video)
It’s not often that I get to write nice things about Philadelphia Phillies fans, who can be a little gruff, to say the least. However, Tony Gwynn can bring out the best in anyone, even though he’s not with us anymore.
You will of course recall that Gwynn, one of the nicest guys in baseball history, passed away last week at the age of 54, ending a two year battle against cancer. Since then his son, Tony Gwynn Jr, has been on bereavement leave from the Philadelphia Phillies. However, last night he returned to the ball club and, in the bottom of the eighth, made his first appearance since his father’s passing.
What did Philly fans do? They gave the 31-year-old a standing ovation, that’s what.
Take a look, and try not to get too choked up:
I don’t say this often, but way to stay classy, Philadelphia. Keep it up.
