Indians Utility Man Mike Aviles Doubles Up White Sox Baserunner with Laser Beam to First Base (Video)

You won’t see Cleveland’s Mike Aviles at the 2014 MLB All-Star game on Tuesday night, but yesterday against the Chicago White Sox the Jack of all trades made one hell of an All-Star-calibre play.

I call Aviles a Jack of all trades because, even though manager Terry Francona him into left field yesterday, he’s not really a left fielder. Primarily an infield utility guy, this season he has 23 appearances at third base, 21 at second base, and five at shortstop, with just 15 appearances in left field—bringing his grand total of games in left field to 19.

However, after catching a fly ball down the left field line on the run and firing a bullet waaaaay over to first base to double up lollygag Chicago third baseman Conor Gillaspie yesterday, something tells me Francona might start pencilling Aviles into LF more often. Because that play was seriously Yoenis Cespedes-esque.

Take a look:

MLB doesn’t have an Outfield Assists Derby, but if they did I imagine Aviles would be in it. That was an absolutely cannon.
