Arsenal Players Adopt New York Accents to Promote Upcoming Friendly, End Up Sounding Ridiculous (Video)
As bad as American’s are at British accents (which is bad), it’s surprising how bad the British are at tackling our accents. I mean, a lot more of them are watching Friends reruns than the we are watching Downton Abby or any of their crap.
To be fair, it’s not just British players that don’t get this one right. It’s a very diverse failure that represents many cultures and backgrounds, featuring miserable attempts from Arsenal‘s Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Serge Gnabry, and Mathieu Flamini. The video was made in anticipation of their friendly
ass-kicking game against the New York Red Bulls of the MLS.
I mean, watch them all fall down on “Fuhgeddaboutit,” and then circle the drain more and more closely with every subsequent phrase. I’m going to guess that English isn’t even the first language (or any language) of some of these players, which could be construed as a little cruel.
Take a look for yourself:
To their enormous credit, they seem to be enjoying it and really getting into it. I guess it comes with the territory of being an internationally renowned athlete, but if my company made me do something like this, I would do the video with a scowl on my face and tears in my eyes, then take the little money I have to hire a publicist to make sure no one ever puts me in that position again.
