David Ortiz Crushes Home Run, Flips Bat, Pisses Off Rays Pitcher (Video)
On the whole, Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is a pretty likable guy, what with the selfies and the hugs and the moving speeches. However, even likable guys can be a-holes from time to time. And on Sunday in Tampa Bay, David Ortiz was a bit of an a-hole.
In the top of the third inning, with two on, one out, and the score tied 0-0, Ortiz destroyed a misplaced changeup from Rays pitcher Chris Archer, giving Boston a quick 3-0 lead. Then he flipped his bat across the plate toward to visiting dugout, paused for a quick “eat it, b*tch,” then turned and strutted to first base.
Take a look:
Now, I’m not a big fan of all the “unwritten rules” nonsense in baseball. But even still, this seems like kind of a dick move. Celebrating a big hit is one thing, but this is another. If I were a pitcher, I imagine I would be annoyed at this.
Well, low and behold, Chris Archer was, in fact, annoyed at this. Here are his thoughts as reported by Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Tribune:
#rays Archer said Ortiz HR trot is “perfect example” of when Price said Ortiz feels he’s “bigger than the game.”

As you would expect, Ortiz had a response:
Ortiz on Archer: “Players in today’s game are too sensitive about things … I think he’s a good pitcher; I think he’s got great stuff.”

Of course, Ortiz is right that guys are too sensitive these days (see Lewis, Colby), and he’s also right that a guy who just joined the league probably shouldn’t make pronouncements about the character of a guy who’s been a star for a long time. But that still doesn’t mean Ortiz wasn’t being a dick when he flipped the bat. Because he was.
