One week ago, life was a lot different for David Wilson. He was practicing with the Giants, on the road back from a neck injury he suffered in October. Now, about nine days later, he has stepped away from the game he loved and excelled at, because doctors said that any football could cause him grave bodily harm.

No doubt, it’s a tough pill to swallow, especially in so short a time frame. That is why David Wilson’s move, though pragmatic, was wrought with emotion and sadness, which became evident during his heartfelt press conference.

Here it is in its entirety:

David Wilson takes the high road during the press conference, discussing how life is full of obstacles, and that this is just one more to overcome. There’s also some touching language about how he views his time in the NFL as a success, and that it’s now time for him to set new goals.

As sad as this turn of events is, it’s nice to be able to report on a (former) player of this character, rather than someone who can’t stop driving drunk or smacking his girlfriend in an elevator.

Good luck, David. You’re making the right move, and your outlook is admirable.
