New York LOLJets Screw Themselves Out of Game-Tying Touchdown with Ill-Advised Timeout (GIFs)
Anyone watching the Jets-Packers game yesterday probably got the feeling that a Jets timeout would be their undoing. Rex Ryan was burning them up early in the second half, and it seemed like his poor clock management would come back to haunt him.
However, after a late game-tying touchdown got called back because Jet’s offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg called timeout right before the snap, Rex Ryan probably wished he had used up his timeouts even faster.
With just about five minutes left in the fourth quarter and New York trailing Green Bay 31-24, Geno Smith threw a beautiful 36-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley on a 4th and 4.
At that point, Jets fans were probably pinching themselves. However, just a few seconds later, the referee turned on his microphone and explained that a timeout had been called just prior to the snap, negating the touchdown. At which point Rex Ryan was shocked, because he never called a timeout.
So then who did call the timeout? Well, take a look at the Jets sideline at the very top of this next GIF.
What you see there is offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg calling for a timeout, which is not allowed. Only the head coach can call a timeout. However, the referee couldn’t see who it was and assumed it was Rex Ryan. So he called the timeout.
Coach fail. Referee fail. No touchdown Jets. Packers win 31-24. LOL.
