Grandma got run over by a reindeer. Steve Spurrier got run over by a quarterback.
Which is worse? Well, in the famous Christmas song, grandma died. But she probably had a long, fulfilling life. Spurrier, on the other hand, got run over by a quarterback and then had to watch his Gamecocks suffer a humiliating upset to an SEC foe, losing his grip on the SEC East title and possibly a shot at making the first ever College Football Playoff.
So I think it’s pretty obvious Spurrier getting run over by a quarterback—both literally and metaphorically—is worse.
The incident in question went down early in the fourth quarter of the Missouri-South Carolina game on Saturday. Spurrier’s Gamecocks were up 13-7 when Tigers quarterback Maty Mauk got forced out of bounds after running the ball for a first down. Mauk then ran into the back of Spurrier, knocking him into the trainer table.
Ironically, if Spurrier had just stayed where he was on the sideline, he would have been fine. However, when he saw Mauk coming in his general direction, he started running. And he wound up running right into his path.
Take a look:
The Tigers would go on to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and hold on for a 21-20 victory.
Bad day for Steve Spurrier all around.
