Last night in Kansas City it was the Royals offense, for a change, that did most of the heavy lifting in their 8-3 Game 3 win over the Los Angeles Angels. However, the Royals defense still made a significant contribution—especially center fielder Lorenzo Cain, who made amazing back-to-back diving catches in the top of the fifth.

Cain and fellow outfielder Nori Aoki teamed up for four amazing catches (two a piece) to help the Royals steal Game 1 from the Angels in Anaheim. But last night it was all Cain. In the top of the fifth, the Angels had two runners on with only one out. The Royals were up 7-2, and Albert Pujols, who gave the Angels their second run of the game with a solo shot in the fourth, was at the plate with a chance to get the Angels back in the game.

What happened? Pujols hit a diving liner to center field that looked like it was going to drop in and load the bases. Except Cain came running in to make a fantastic sliding grab. Then Howie Kendrick came to the plate and lined a shot to the gap in left-center field that looked like a bases clearing double. Except Cain ran that down too and made an absolutely ridiculous diving catch.

Inning over, rally squashed.

Take a look:

Back-to-back diving catches? I’d say it’s unbelievable, but of course everything about these Royals is unbelievable.
