This Cal Fake Punt Attempt Against USC Was Just So, So Sad (Video)
College football fans (and sports bloggers) have been blessed with an overabundance of hilariously awful fake punts this year. So when I say this Cal fake punt attempt against USC last night might be the most hilariously awful yet, that’s saying something.
Yes, that Arkansas State fake punt was terrible. I mean, Jesus, they had a guy fake his own death. But the play wasn’t poorly executed. It was just poorly conceived.
The Cal fake punt attempt last night? That was poorly executed. Trailing USC 28-2 in the second quarter, the Golden Bears were wise to try to spark a rally with a fake punt, and the fake punt they attempted was pretty standard fare. Unfortunately, punter Cole Leininger just sucked so bad. He did this weird knee-up thing, then threw a sad, weak pass to nobody without even moving his feet.
Take a look:
The funny thing is that Cal actually did end up making a game of it. They scored a touchdown with 1:36 left in the game that made it 38-30. So if the fake punt hadn’t been so pathetic, they might have actually won the game.
