USC’s Josh Shaw Finally Explains Why He Jumped Out of That Building (Video)
Remember USC defensive back Josh Shaw? He was the biggest feel-good story in sports for about a day, when we all believed that he sprained both his ankles jumping from a second story balcony to the ground below to save his seven-year-old nephew from drowning.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before we learned none of it was true, and that he had actually sprained his ankle jumping from the balcony of his girlfriend’s apartment and was being investigated by the LAPD for domestic violence. After that, USC coach Steve Sarkesian suspended Shaw indefinitely, and we haven’t heard a peep from him…until now.
This week, Josh Shaw finally explained why he jumped off his girlfriend’s balcony to Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke. And that reason was Ferguson.
No really. Shaw basically says he jumped off a third-story balcony because he was afraid of police after the Michael Brown shooting 2,000 miles away in Missouri. Which, sadly, is kind of plausible.
Here’s an excerpt:
On Aug. 23, after the annual Salute to Troy barbecue on campus, one week before the season opener against Fresno State, Shaw went home to meet Chilton, whom he has dated for more than seven years. They started arguing and Chilton ran out of the apartment and disappeared down the hall.
“We just got into an argument just like every couple does,” Shaw said. “Was it loud? Yes. Was it overly loud? I don’t think so.”
Shaw remained in the apartment until he heard noise below his balcony. He walked outside to see police cars pulling up on the street. Shaw and Chilton adamantly deny the argument ever became physical — “I would never, ever hit a woman,” Shaw said — but he worried about appearances.
“We were not on good terms when she left, I thought she had somebody call authorities. I was thinking the worst,” he said. “If she did say anything, I’m a black man with dreadlocks, and with everything going on in the country at the time, all that stuff in St. Louis [Ferguson, Mo.] … in my mind, I’m going to leap from the balcony so authorities did not see me.”
As for the phoney story about saving his nephew, Shaw said he never intended it to go viral. He just wanted to give his coaches a better excuse for what he thought was going to be a season-ending injury than “I was running from the Cops.” But USC sports information director Tim Tessalone insisted that they had to explain what the hell happened to their starting cornerback, and backed him into a corner, Shaw felt he had no choice but to stick with the lie.
Oh, and about Josh Shaw’s girlfriend, Angela Chilton? She insists Shaw never laid a hand on her. The two are still together.
