Canadian Fans Cheer For Slovakian Goalie at World Juniors (Video)

Canadian fans cheer Slovak Goalie

Canadians love their hockey, and they love their hockey teams even more.  But on Sunday, following Canada’s 5-1 victory over Slovakia in the semi-finals of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, the thousands of Canadian fans in attendance took a moment to show some appreciation for the opposing team’s goalie.

Slovak netminder Denis Godla may have allowed five goals against, but it could have been a lot worse.  Godla made 39 saves on the evening, and at least a dozen of those were of the spectacular variety.  So when the Slovakian team failed to show some appreciation for their goalie by awarding the team’s “Player of the Game” to forward Pavol Skalicky (teams choose their own “Player of the Game” in this tournament), the fans at the ACC made it clear to Godla that they knew who the real MVP of the Slovakian team was by cheering “Goalie! Goalie! Goalie!” while Skalicky received his award.

It was a pretty awesome gesture from the Canadian crowd.  Although, it must have been pretty awkward for Skalicky to be standing there and listening to everyone in the building voice their disapproval with his “Player of the Game” status.
