Stan Van Gundy, Strategic Mastermind: “Just Form a F*cking Wall” (Video)
Stan Van Gundy is a good coach. He proved that with the Miami Heat. He proved it with the Orlando Magic. And, chances are, he’ll eventually prove it with the Detroit Pistons.
Actually, scratch that. Van Gundy is already proving that with the Pistons. After starting the season 5-23, Detroit has now won six games in a row, bringing them to 11-23. That stretch includes a 23-point pounding of LeBron and the Cavaliers and, on Tuesday night, a quality win over the defending champion San Antonio Spurs.
What’s behind this winning streak? Brilliant strategy like this:
That’s right, boys. Just form a f*cking wall.
Of course, I joke because hearing Stan Van Gundy say just form a f*cking wall is funny, as is the idea of a “Form a F*cking Wall Defense.” But in the context of the Spurs game, this was indeed good strategy. The Pistons were up by one point with 0.1 seconds left in the game, and the Spurs had the ball. The only thing the Spurs could do, according to the Trent Tucker Rule, was tap or dunk the ball in. So the only thing the Pistons needed to do was build a wall around the basket to make sure that couldn’t happen.
Nice coaching, Stan.
