Instant Karma: Ryan Reaves Takes Skate to the Face After Tripping Teuvo Teravainen (Video)
During the Sunday matinee between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks on NBC, Blues forward Ryan Reaves took a really stupid penalty. Midway through the first period, he stuck his stick in front of Hawks forward Teuvo Teravainen as he was skating to the bench, tripping him up right in front of the referees.
It was the kind of unnecessary penalty that drives coaches crazy, the kind of thing that gets you benched for a few shifts. However, St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock didn’t need to bench Ryan Reaves for a few shifts. Teravainen’s skate benched Reaves for him. As Teravainen was going down, his skate came up and caught Reaves right in the mouth.
Take a look:
That thud NBC analyst Pierre McGuire heard coming from the mouth of Ryan Reaves? That was the sound of Teravainen’s skate breaking off one of Reaves’s teeth. A Blues trainer was later seen picking it up off the ice while Reaves went to the locker room for the remainder of the period to have some emergency dental work done.
Talk about scary. I think karma may have gone a little overboard in this case.
Of course, Reaves later returned to the game, broken tooth and all. Because he’s a hockey player.
