Jameis Winston Combine: QB Impresses Scouts With Performance (Videos)

Jameis Winston combine performance

Heading into the 2015 NFL Combine, Jameis Winston was believed to be the favorite to be taken first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the draft on April 30.  Following his performance in Indianapolis over the weekend, it may now be as close to a sure thing as you can get.

Winston didn’t put up any eye-popping numbers, but he impressed in several other areas.  For starters, there was his press conference on Friday, where he displayed the type of confidence that every NFL coach, general manager, and owner would like to see from their starting quarterback.

Next came his time with Steve Mariucci on the whiteboard, where Winston showed that he is perfectly capable of understanding coverages and dissecting plays, even when the coach is trying his best to throw the 21-year-old off his game:

Finally, it was time for Jameis to show what he’s got on the field.

His 28.5-inch vertical jump, 8’7″ broad jump, and 4.97 second 40-yard dash were all less-than-impressive, but they are also pretty meaningless factors when evaluating quarterbacks. What matters most is how they throw the ball. And in that area, Winston looked fantastic on Saturday.

Here’s a look at his on-field performance:

If there were any questions regarding Winston’s skills as a quarterback, I believe he answered those with his performance over the weekend. Now the only question remaining is whether or not his off-field issues make him unworthy of a top draft pick. The Bucs are the first team that will be faced with that question. We’ll have their answer a few months from now.
