NFL Rushing Champ Chris Johnson Shot in Orlando Drive-By
Former Jets and Titans running back Chris Johnson, 29, was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Orlando on Sunday.
He and a man named Reggie Johnson, 29, were extremely lucky to come out alive. Chris suffered a wound to the arm or shoulder, while Reggie suffered wounds to the shoulder, hand, and leg. Both are listed in stable condition.
The driver of the vehicle, Dreekius Oricko Johnson, 28 was not so fortunate. He died of gunshots wounds at the scene.
The shooting occurred around four in the morning. According to the police report, when the Jeep the three Johnsons were driving in pulled to a stop at an Orlando intersection, another vehicle pulled up beside them and opened fire.
Initial reports indicate the three victims were friends, not relatives. But Orlando is Chris Johnson’s hometown, so that could change.
Chris Johnson had recently been released by the Jets after just one season in which he rushed for just 663 yards on 155 caries, both career lows. However, he’s one of just seven men in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, and he holds the record for fastest 40 in the history of the NFL combine. Normally, you would expect him to get scooped up by another team right away.
However, this shooting is the second gun-related incident of the offseason for Johnson. In January he was arrested and charged with the open carrying of a firearm after being pulled over for a traffic violation.
Given this latest tragedy, teams may let the dust settle a bit before signing this guy up.
