Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams Takes Break from Coaching Game to Coach Fan in Free Throw Contest (Video)

Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams likes to keep the vibe light, apparently.

On Wednesday night, the Hokies played the Miami Hurricanes in the ACC Tournament. With about 10 minutes to play in the second half, Miami up 35-34, and Virginia Tech’s season on the line, Williams called a time out to go over some strategy with his guys. Then, when he was done coaching his NCAA Division I basketball team, Buzz Williams turned his attention to coaching the young woman trying to win $500 in the free throw contest.

Maybe Williams knew his 11-21 team wasn’t going to be some March Madness cinderella anyway. Maybe he knew his job was safe since he’s a first-year coach and ADs generally give rookies a few years to prove themselves. Or maybe keeping things loose is just his style.

Whatever the case, you just don’t see this sort of thing every day.

I don’t know how things turned out for this young woman. But Virginia Tech wound up losing the game 59-49.

Hopefully Buzz didn’t take it too hard.
