R.A. Dickey Stole the Famous Daniel Norris Camper Van and Parked It on the Infield (Pics)
If you’re a baseball fan who reads, chances are you’ve heard of Toronto Blue Jays prospect Daniel Norris.
That’s him there in the above photo. And that’s his VW camper van, which is where he lives during the offseason.
It’s not that he’s blown through the $2 million signing bonus he received in 2011 at the age of 18. It’s that he’s a free spirit who wants to live on the beach so he can wake up to the sounds of the waves, unencumbered by the yoke of material possessions. Which is to say, yes, he’s a bearded hippie.
Norris has been getting all kinds of press this spring training season because of his unconventional lifestyle. We didn’t write anything about him because, at the end of the day, it’s just a story about a rich white kid who goes off on a journey to find himself without really having to risk anything because he knows he has an extremely high-paying job to fall back on. And I’m not saying Norris isn’t a cool dude, or that he’s disengenuous. I’m just saying I don’t really care.
Now, Norris’s 40-year-old Blue Jays teammate R.A. Dickey? There’s an interesting guy who’s been around the block a few times. In fact, he might be the most interesting man in Major League Baseball. And the fact that he stole the famous Daniel Norris camper van and drove it onto the infield at the Jays training facility in Dunedin, Florida, as a mild form of rookie hazing? Yeah, I’ll write a post about that in a heartbeat.
