Senators Fan Throws Burger on the Ice as Tribute to Senators Goalie Andrew Hammond (Video)
The Ottawa Senators currently sit five points back of the final wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. In the era of the three-point game, that’s still a lot of ground to make up if they want to make the playoffs.
However, they wouldn’t even be that close if not for third string goalie Andrew Hammond.
Hammond was only called up from the Binghamton Senators at the end of January, after Craig Anderson was injured. At that point, he was 7-13-2 with a 3.51 goals-against average in 25 games in the AHL. So Ottawa didn’t exactly have tons of confidence in the guy. However, they were forced to start him on February 18 after Robin Lehner, the Sens’ second-stringer, was also injured. And all Hammond has done ever since—cue DJ Khaled—is win.
The guy is 10-0-1 since taking over netminding duties, a streak that includes a pair of shutouts and a 1.39 goals-against average. In fact, Hammond hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any of his 11 career NHL starts. That ties an NHL record.
As a result of this incredible hot streak, Hammond is now a rockstar in Ottawa, where fans call him “The Hamburglar”…probably because he has a picture of the McDonald’s cartoon character on his helmet:
At this point, if the Senators gave Anderson his starting job back there would probably be an uprising in the Canadian capital. Just look what happened last night.
After Hammond and the Senators beat the Flyers 2-1 in a shootout, a fan threw a hamburger on the ice as a tribute, and the Hamburglar picked it up and held it above his head like a championship trophy.
This has got to be the best story of the 2014-15 NHL season. I hope the magic never ends.
