NCAA Wrestling Champ: “I Just Want Some Ice Cream, Man” (Video)
Most of the sports world is obsessed with the NCAA men’s basketball tournament right now. However, it just so happens the greatest moment in sports this weekend actually came from the NCAA men’s wrestling tournament.
The man behind the moment is Iowa State senior Kyven Gadson. For years, Kyven and his father had dreamed about reaching the pinnacle of collegiate wrestling. However, just months after Kyven’s freshman season was cut short by a serious shoulder injury, his father was diagnosed with lung and bone cancer. One year later, Gadson’s dad had passed away, and he had decided to quit wrestling.
Fortunately, Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Jackson convinced Gadson to stay. And on Sunday in St. Louis, Kyven Gadson made his dream and his late father’s dream come true. He won the NCAA 197-pound national championship, pinning Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder in the second round to cap an undefeated season.
Then he gave us the best sports quote since “I’m only here so I won’t get fined.”
If you’ve got the time, you should go back and watch from the start of the second period, which begins at the 5:17 mark. However, in the interest of brevity, I’ve cued it up at the post-match interview.
Take a look:
I don’t know about you, but any time I do something awesome from now on and someone congratulates me, I’m going to say “I just want some ice cream, man.”
