Boston Marathon Bombing Verdict: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Guilty
The Boston Marathon bombing verdict is in. Two years after three innocent people were murdered and 264 others were maimed or injured, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the two brothers accused of orchestrating and carrying out the terrorist attack, has been found guilty in a court of law.
The jury began deliberating on Tuesday. On Wednesday, after a total of 11½ hours, they reached a verdict. Tsarnaev was found guilty of all 30 charges against him, including the 17 that carry the possibility of a death sentence. These include:
- Conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death
- Using a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, and aiding and abetting
- Using or carrying a weapon in relation to a crime of violence
- Conspiracy to bomb a public place
- Bombing a public place
This does not mean Tsarnaev will be executed. The jury will now have to decide whether he gets the death penalty or life in prison.
During the trial, defense attorneys had tried to argue that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died in a shootout with police, was the brains behind the attack, while Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was just a young and confused kid following the older brother he idolized. If the defense makes this case again and the jury finds it compelling, the younger Tasarnaev could certainly escape capital punishment.
Regardless of what eventually happens, though, lets hope the verdict brings a measure of closure to the victims of this horrible crime.
