Clutch Last-Minute Goal by Calgary’s Kris Russell Steals Game 1 from Canucks (Video)
Nobody picked the Calgary Flames to make the playoffs this season over teams like the Kings, Avalanche, Stars, and Sharks. But they did. And now, after a last-minute goal by defenseman Kris Russell, they own a 1-0 lead in their first round series agains the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second period of Game 1. However, the Flames tied the game with 12 minutes to play in the third. Then, with less than a minute to play in regulation—seeking to avoid sudden death overtime—the Flames got the Canucks hemmed in their own zone and cycled the puck around looking for one last shot.
That last shot ended up being taken by Russell from the left point with 30 seconds left. And thanks to a huge screen set up in front of Canucks netminder Eddie Lack, it sailed right in.
Check it out:
That was one hell of a shift to end the game, and an absolutely perfect shot by Russell.
The Flames lost their captain and best player Mark Giordano to a biceps injury last month, but they finished 12-6-3 to reach the playoffs. Now they’ve overcome a 1-0 deficit in Game 1 to take a 1-0 lead in their opening round series.
Right now, these guys have to feel like there is nothing that they can’t overcome. And if I were a Canucks fan, I’d be very worried.
