Blue Jays-Orioles Rivalry: Tempers Flare When Bautista Gets Revenge for Wild Pitch by Smashing Home Run
I’d say the Royals and A’s have the most intense rivalry going so far this year, what with all the hit batters and ejections over the weekend in Kansas City. However, right behind them at a close second I’d put the burgeoning Blue Jays-Orioles rivalry. And not just because both teams are named after North American woodland birds.
The first spark between these AL East rivals flew just over a week ago, during the teams’ first series in Baltimore. Jose Bautista revived an old rivalry with O’s reliever Darren O’Day by cracking a home run off of him and talking a bit of trash about it after the game.
On Tuesday in Toronto that spark caught fire.
In the first game of their second series of the season, the Jays rocked the Orioles pitchers for 13 hits and 11 runs through the first six innings. So when Bautista came to the plate with a man on second and nobody out, and reliever Jason Garcia threw an 0-1 pitch behind him? Well, even Baltimore manager Buck Showalter admitted it didn’t look good. And Bautista was pissed.
Of course, Bautista responded by hitting a two-run homer, staring at it, flipping his bat, yelling obscenities at Orioles players as he rounded the bases, and then staring at the Orioles dugout after he crossed home plate:
Obviously, that performance did nothing to cool tensions. So it should come as no surprise that there was more yapping between Bautista and O’s center fielder Adam Jones the next inning:
I don’t know what you’re doing tonight, but if you have one of MLB’s cable or streaming packages, you might want to check out Game 2 between these two teams. Things might get crazy.
