Huge Tom Wilson Hit Decimates the Islanders’ Lubomir Visnovsky (GIF)
The 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs are still young, but they have not been without controversy.
Now we have our first big, bonecrushing hit. And yes, I’m sure there are some who think it merits a suspension.
The hit comes to us courtesy of Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson during Game 4 of the Caps’ first round series against the Islanders. With just over 14 minutes left in the second period, he dumped the puck into the Islanders zone and chased after it into the corner. There he came across New York’s Lubomir Visnovsky, and although Visnovky no longer had the puck, Wilson plowed over him anyway, flattening him like a pancake.
Take a look:
The referees called a charging penalty on this play. Some of course will say it was not charging because Wilson had a reason to make his beeline to the corner (he was chasing the puck) and because he had stopped moving his feet before running into Visnovsky. And this is true.
However, it is also true that Visnovsky did not actually have the puck, so this Tom Wilson hit was going to be penalized either way. And personally, I’m fine with charging. Even though this play didn’t meet the letter of the law, it certainly met the spirit of the law. That was a violent hit, and Visnovsky could miss Game 5 because of it.
