Jim Kelly Deflategate Comments: “No Doubt” Brady Cheated, But It Won’t Affect His Legacy as Greatest of All Time
Legendary Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly is currently doing a little media tour with his daughter, Erin Kelly, publicizing the book she wrote about his fight against cancer. However, what everybody really wants to hear are Kelly’s thoughts on Deflategate. And despite the fact that he considers Tom Brady a “good friend,” Kelly has not been reluctant to share his true feelings.
On Wednesday, he told the hosts of CBS Sports’ We Need to Talk that “there’s no doubt” Brady is guilty of a conspiracy to deflate footballs.
“There’s no way,” he reasoned, “that an equipment manager in the National Football League is going to do something to the football without the greatest quarterback ever to play knowing.”
Kelly also said basically the same thing over at ESPN talking to the hosts of NFL Nation TV, adding that he did think the punishment was “a little much.”
“The bottom line is, you do something that you’re not supposed to do, sooner or later you’re going to get caught,” Kelly said. “They got caught, they’re going to pay the price. Maybe not quite as much as was levied on them. But you know what? Something has to happen.”
So is there an advantage to deflated footballs?
“Yeah, there’s an advantage to it. But I don’t think Tom Brady needed to do any of that. He could throw a football if it was overinflated. It really didn’t matter because he’s one of the greatest ever to play the game. It’s just sad that it’s come down to this.”
And what about Brady’s legacy?
“I still believe Tom Brady is one of the greatest to ever play the game,” Kelly opined, “and I don’t think it’s going to hurt his legacy at all.”
So, let’s hear it internet. Agree or disagree with certified awesome dude Jim Kelly?
