American Pharoah to Grace the Cover of SI This Week (Pics)

American Pharoah

Getting a picture of a horse running during a race doesn’t sound like it would be a big deal, but according to Erick Rasco, the man responsible for the pic on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated, the photo he got was a combination of dumb luck and some good equipment. However, what you don’t see, because of the cropping for our feature image, is what’s just out of frame on the bottom, but will be very apparent on the magazine’s cover.

Here’s a full-size image of the cover, which features, obviously, American Pharoah racing down the homestretch of the Belmont Stakes, on his way to winning the Triple Crown:

More people with their phones out than actually watching history being made. I’m not going to get all Andy Rooney on everyone with some diatribe about people burying their faces in phones, but it is a pretty interesting pic. Honestly, the dynamic of the crowd might be more interesting than the horse that’s running fast in a straight line.

Even without the hoopla about the phones, it’s a pretty cool shot, befitting the phenomenon surrounding the Triple Crown.  And you can read about how the photographer got it right here.
