Steph Curry Carried Andre Ward’s Title Belt Before His Fight Against Paul Smith on Saturday (Video)
Oakland native Andre Ward has had a tough couple of years. In 2013 he was stripped of his WBC super-middleweight title after being inactive for eight months, despite the fact that the reason Ward was inactive was because he had shoulder surgery. Then, after returning to the ring in November of 2013 and retaining his Ring and lineal WBA super-middleweight titles, he sat out all of 2014 while feuding with his promotor Dan Goosen, who passed away in September.
So how do you stage a comeback after a long layoff like that? Well, you start by booking a fight in front of your home town crowd. Then you get that home crowd pumped up by having the most popular human being in town carry your title belt.
In Ward’s case, that meant booking a fight at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, then getting 2015 NBA MVP and new NBA Champion Steph Curry to carry your title belt into the ring.
Take a look:
How far will Ward’s comeback go? That remains to be seen. But he did beat Paul Smith via TKO in the ninth round on Saturday. So Steph Curry might have to carry Andre Ward’s title belt from here on out.
