Virginia Wins College World Series, Produces Epic Photo
The comeback is complete, revenge has been exacted, and the Virginia Cavaliers men’s baseball team are the 2015 College World Series Champions.
After dropping Game 1 of the series to the Vanderbilt Commodores—who beat Virginia in last year’s College World Series—the Cavaliers stormed back to win Game 2, 3-0. And last night, during a winner-take-all Game 3, Virginia rallied behind a big offensive performance from Pavin Smith (one homer, three RBIs) to capture their first ever CWS title with a 4-2 victory.
And once Cavs pitcher Nathan Kirby closed things out in the ninth, it was time to celebrate. The dude in the top right corner of the image below seems to know what I’m talking about:
He’s happy. And he has every right to be. The Cavaliers barely even made it into the ACC Tournament, needing to sweep North Carolina in their final three games of the regular season just to earn themselves a spot in the ACC Tournament. And they needed to beat Georgia Tech in a play-in game in order to make it to the NCAA Tournament. But from there, they Swept through the round-robin portion of the NCAA tourney, swept Maryland in the Super Regionals, and recorded victories over Arkansas, Florida, and Florida again in order to book their rematch in the finals against Vandy.
It was a long road, but judging by the sense of joy displayed in that photo, I’d say it was worth it in the end.
Hat Tip to the Associated Press for the photo.
