Mike Richards Caught Carrying OxyContin Across US-Canada Border
Mike Richards‘ contract with the Los Angeles Kings was terminated due to “a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player’s Contract.” The move suggested Richards may have done something bad, and now we know what that something is.
According to the Winnipeg Sun, Mike Richards was arrested at the Canadian border on June 17th after he was caught carrying OxyContin pills into the country. Richards was held in custody at the Emerson, Manitoba border crossing for over four hours. No charges have been laid, but the Manitoba RCMP are currently investigating the matter.
It’s just the latest event in what has been a rather steep decline for both Mike Richards and the Los Angeles Kings—with the former going from Olympic Gold Medal and Stanley Cup winner to the waiver wire, and the latter going from Cup Champs to not even making the playoffs (not to mention the whole Jarret Stoll offseason cocaine fiasco).
If the Kings hope to continue the trend of alternating Stanley Cup Championships with the Chicago Blackhawks, they’re going to have to clean up the giant mess that was left behind following the 2014-15 season, or risk having that mess spill over into their 2015-16 campaign.
