Sad Lionel Messi Refuses Copa America MVP Award After Losing to Chile in Finals (Video)
At the club level, all Lionel Messi does is win. The guy’s won seven La Liga titles and four Champions League titles with Barcelona. He’s scored more goals than anybody in the history of La Liga. He’s been named the world soccer player of the year four times. He’s not a soccer player. He’s a soccer deity.
At the international level? Not so much. He did win a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics, but nobody really cares about that. In the international competitions that matter, like the World Cup and the Copa America, all Messi has to show for himself are second-place medals.
Of course, there was no way Argentina was going to beat Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. The Germans were just way too talented and fine-tuned to lose. But the 2015 Copa America final against Chile? That was winnable. So when Argentina didn’t win, Messi was muy triste.
How muy triste was he? So muy triste that he apparently refused to accept the Copa America MVP award after the match:
You certainly can’t blame the guy for refusing the award. I wouldn’t want some stupid Man of the Tournament trophy after I just lost another big game either.
