Wimbledon Fans Laugh at Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka’s Grunting (Video)
How bad has the grunting in tennis got? So bad that even the fans at Wimbledon couldn’t help but laugh at it during Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.
Watch, and have a laugh yourself:
Following the match (which Serena won, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3), Azarenka was asked about the crowd’s reaction to their grunting. Here’s her response (via The Guardian):
“It’s so annoying because guys grunt. I was practising next to Rafael Nadal, and he grunts louder than me, and nobody notices that. Why? I don’t understand why. Both women on the court were trying their hardest and giving everything, and they make noises.
“Is that a problem for tennis? It happens in every sport. So I think maybe it’s time to just put it aside and not talk about it all the time because this is not what is important when there are two players on the Centre Court. We’ve got to look a little bit past that and see: ‘Oh, my God, Serena played 24 aces.’ Look at the good stuff, stop bringing this ridiculous stuff. Let’s put aside the noise and how she looks, and look at the game. The game proved itself today.”
This isn’t the first time these two women have grunted their way through a match at the All England Club. Here’s a look at a rather loud point they took part in back in 2009. If you’re at work, you may want to turn the volume down a tad:
Personally, I’m not a big fan of the grunting in tennis, but if you’re the type who enjoys that sort of thing, you may want to get yourself the Serena Williams grunt ringtone:
