Aldon Smith Arrested For DUI, Hit and Run, Vandalism (Video)
Just when we were starting to believe that Aldon Smith may have turned a corner and straightened himself up, he goes and does something like this.
The San Francisco 49ers defensive end was arrested in Santa Clara, California on Thursday night for hit and run, driving under the influence, and vandalism. While details are scarce at the moment, what we do know is Smith’s bail was set at $26,000, which he posted on Friday.
Here’s what the 25-year-old former first-rounder had to say upon his release:
This is the latest in a long line of legal troubles from Aldon Smith. He was arrested in January 2012 for DUI (which was later reduced to reckless driving), and later that year, in June, he was involved in an incident at a party that resulted in three felony weapons charges (they were eventually reduced). The following year, he was hit with another DUI charge that led to an 11 day work release and a nine-game suspension from the NFL prior to the start of the 2014 season. And in 2014, he was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport after telling a TSA agent he had a bomb (he didn’t), but no charges were filed.
After hearing about Smith’s latest run-in with the law, a league source had the following to say to ESPN’s Josina Anderson:
“He [Smith] was on a track and he was making good decisions. But I’ll say one thing, there shouldn’t be a rush to judgment. We need to figure out what happened and not go into a instant panic. There is usually much more to a story. Let’s not overreact and say his career with the 49ers is over just yet.”
It has since been reported that the 49ers are expected to release Smith, which is not surprising, seeing as how he’s likely to be handed a lengthy suspension for his latest arrest.
More information regarding exactly what transpired Thursday night should be available soon. Stay tuned.
