This Matt Simms Fumble Is Easily the Saddest Play of the 2015 NFL Preseason (Video)
Normally if an NFL quarterback throws the ball away while being sacked 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, you’d give the guy a pat on the back for saving his team 12 yards.
That’s because, normally, the quarterback throws the ball forward, which thus makes it an incomplete pass.
Unfortunately for Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Simms on Thursday night, he did not throw the ball forward. As he was being sacked 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage on 1st and 10 from the Detroit 25, Simms threw the ball 20 yards backwards. That means it was ruled a fumble, not a pass.
When it was all said and done, after Lions DE Kerry Hyder recovered the ball and ran it another nine yards down field, the Bills lost 38 yards (!) on the play.
Take a look:
I think it’s safe to say this Matt Simms fumble is the most embarrassing play of the entire 2015 NFL preseason. But wait, it gets worse!
On the ensuing possession, having been handed excellent field position, the Lions scored a touchdown to make it 17-10. And that’s the way the game ended.
Something tells me Matt Simms will not remember his last game in a Bills jersey fondly.
