Ronda Rousey Hangs Up On Conference Call When Reporter Asks Here About Travis Browne (Audio)
On Thursday, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, Joanna Jędrzejczyk, and Vaerie Letourneau took part in a conference call with reporters to promote UFC 193, which will be held in Melbourne, Australia, on November 15.
Unfortunately, the main star of the call didn’t stay on the line very long. A few minutes in, journalist Marc Raimondi from MMAFighting.com asked Rousey about her relationship with fellow MMA fighter Travis Browne, and after a few seconds of silence she hung up the phone and never came back.
“I know you’re trying to focus and only speak about stuff that’s happening inside the octagon, training and all that,” Raimondi says, “but recently Travis Browne announced that you guys were in a relationship. Were you okay with him announcing that? Were you cool with that?”
Needless to say, it was pretty awkward. Have a listen:
Now, some might say that Ronda had every right to hang up because she was there to talk about MMA, and the reporter asked a question about her personal life. And normally that would be my position. But not here.
You see, when you promote a fight, part of what you are promoting is your image. And in Ronda Rousey’s case, her image is that of a badass independent woman who doesn’t take shit from anyone.
Hell, her personal slogan is “don’t be a do-nothing bitch.”
So the fact that she is dating Travis Browne, a guy the UFC suspended over allegations that he beat his wife? Well, that’s relevant to the image she is trying to sell to MMA fans. And I think it’s fair game to ask her to address it.
