Penguins Forward Bryan Rust Was Phil Kessel’s Hot Dog For Halloween (Pic)
I’ll be the first one to admit that Phil Kessel does not look like a professional athlete. But you can’t judge a book by its cover. Kessel may look like a chubby, dishevelled schlub, but who cares? The dude has scored 251 goals in just 679 NHL games, and he deserves some freakin’ respect.
Unfortunately, Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons just doesn’t see it that way. So when the Maple Leafs traded Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins back in July, he told a story about how the chubby, dishevelled schlub would apparently get a hot dog from the stand near his place at 2:30 p.m. almost every day.
The problem with that story? As explained in painstaking detail by Pension Plan Puppets, the SB Nation Leafs blog, Phil Kessel didn’t live anywhere near where Simmons said he lived. And that led everyone to assume Simmons either made the story up and fudged some of the most important details for shock value.
Fortunately, if there’s one thing Kessel gained from his time in Toronto, it’s a thick skin. So when his new Pittsburgh teammate Bryan Rust dressed up as Phil Kessel’s hot dog at a Penguins Halloween party—a jab at Simmons and the insane Toronto sports media—Kessel had a good laugh.
And of course, he also posed for a pic:
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Kessel himself was dressed up as a tennis player…along with his crazy hot girlfriend:

So yeah, I’d say he’s not losing any sleep over not being in Toronto any more.
