If the San Francisco 49ers could, they’d probably just end the misery that is their 2015 season right now. But they can’t. So in the meantime, they’re going to try something different at the quarterback position, opting to bench a horrible Colin Kaepernick for an equally (maybe more?) horrible Blaine Gabbert.
The quarterback change, which was first reported by Bay Area Sports Guy, means that Gabbert will be under center for the 49ers when they take on the Atlanta Falcons at home next Sunday.
Just two years after taking the Niners to the Super Bowl, Kaepernick appears to be a shell of former self, completing just 59.3% of his pass attempts for 1,615 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions this season. His 47.6 QBR and 78.8 passer rating are among the worst in the entire league, and more importantly, his team’s 2-6 record is the worst in the NFC West.
As for Gabbert, well, I wouldn’t expect much from a guy with 24 interceptions, 23 touchdowns, and a passer rating of just 66.8 in 29 career appearances.
No, these are not your father’s Niners.
