NFL Fines Panthers’ Josh Norman $5000 for Wearing Patriotic Cleats (Pics)
In case you were wondering, no, the NFL still doesn’t get it. After fining players for wearing cleats honoring victims of domestic violence and eye black promoting cancer research, now they’re fining guys for wearing patriotic cleats honoring veterans on Veterans Day.
Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman wore red and blue camo cleats against the Packers on Sunday, which was “Salute to Service” day at Bank of America Stadium. Now he owes the league $5,000.
The problem with the cleats? Oh, it wasn’t that the garish colors clashed with the Panthers’ colors. It was the message subtly embroidered in gold thread on the side: “PROUDBRAVE.”
Take a look:
Oh? What’s that? You don’t see it? Yeah, that’s because the words are pretty subtle and you have to be right up on top of them to read them:
Norman says he plans to auction the cleats off and donate the money to troops at Fort Jackson, an army training base in Columbia, South Carolina.
Meanwhile, the NFL probably plans to use his $5,000 to buy new seat cushions for the corporate jet.
